{"id":20,"date":"2008-12-31T18:59:30","date_gmt":"2008-12-31T23:59:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.alanporter.com\/2008-12-31\/just-a-sec"},"modified":"2008-12-31T18:59:30","modified_gmt":"2008-12-31T23:59:30","slug":"just-a-sec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alanporter.com\/blog\/2008\/12\/31\/just-a-sec\/","title":{"rendered":"Just a sec&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As we are all counting down to welcome in 2009, we should be reminded to wait just a second, to stop wishing our lives away.<\/p>\n<p>At 7pm Eastern time (midnight UTC), the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iers.org\/\">official international time-keeping standards body<\/a> inserted a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leap_second\">leap second<\/a>&#8221; into the normal stream of ordinary seconds.<\/p>\n<p>This is done periodically to keep our standard clocks (UTC) in sync with &#8220;mean solar time&#8221;, which is based on the Earth&#8217;s position and rotation.
